New York Reviews

The New Yorker

William Finn, the composer-lyricist behind “Falsettos” and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” gets a musical revue spanning much of his career, from best-loved numbers to rarities. A cast of four performs the songs, along with an onstage piano player who, with his Steinway, is spun around when things get exuberant; wryly hanging above them is an imposing neon representation of Finn's head. The wit, tunefulness, and rugged humanity that made the “Falsettos” material beloved are in evidence here, as are plenty of crowd-pleasing jokes, about Republicans, genetics (“The bad trait / will always predominate”), Passover (“the feast of no yeast”), and so on. Conceived and directed by Rob Ruggiero. (New World Stages, 340 W. 50th St. 212-239-6200.)

Presented by Junkyard Dog Productions, Demos Bizar Entertinment and Surefire Theatrical in association with Larry Hirschhorn, Remmel T Dickinson, Jayson Raitt and Mariano Tolentino, Jr.
